Real Madrid Survives Atlético Madrid’s Challenge in Thrilling Shootout

Madrid, Spain – Real Madrid advanced to the Champions League quarterfinals after defeating local rivals Atlético Madrid in a suspenseful penalty shootout on Wednesday at the Metropolitano Stadium. The match, which ended in a 1-0 victory for Atlético, completed a 2-2 aggregate tie, leading to penalties where Real triumphed 4-2.
Atlético took an early lead with a goal from Conor Gallagher just 27 seconds into the match, igniting hopes for a long-awaited victory over their more successful rivals. The goal leveled the aggregate score at 2-2, putting immense pressure on both teams as they would battle for advancement in extra time and beyond.
“We came into this game with a different mentality,” said Real midfielder Jude Bellingham, who successfully converted a penalty in the shootout. “We know how to handle these moments, and tonight was another example of that,” he stated post-match.
Real Madrid’s chances were almost dashed in the second half when Atlético was awarded a penalty. However, Julián Álvarez’s attempt was ruled out by VAR after he accidentally touched the ball twice during the kick. “I was incredulous,” Álvarez reportedly said, expressing his shock at the decision.
Atlético coach Diego Simeone questioned the VAR ruling, challenging journalists to raise their hands if they witnessed the alleged double touch. “It’s bad luck for Álvarez, but it can happen,” said Thibaut Courtois, Real’s goalkeeper, who suggested that Atlético should have pushed harder for more goals after their early advantage.
The game remained tense as it progressed into extra time, with both teams unable to capitalize on opportunities. Real eventually regained control, concluding with a flawless display in the penalty shootout. Kylian Mbappé, Bellingham, and Federico Valverde all scored, while Atlético’s Álvarez and Antoine Griezmann faltered.
The victory sends Real Madrid into the quarterfinals, where they will face Arsenal, a team they haven’t played since 2006. “It’s a huge match for us,” Bellingham said. “We need to be ready and improve as a unit to go all the way.”
Simeone acknowledged the ongoing challenges he faces against Real Madrid, noting, “We played well, but the results speak for themselves. We need to find a way to get past this mental barrier.”
With this result, Atlético remains without a win over their neighbors in six attempts in the Champions League, intensifying the rivalry ahead of future encounters. Meanwhile, Real must capitalize on their advancing momentum as they prepare for a defining clash with Arsenal, hoping to extend their Champions League title record.
