Receiver Trades Spark NFL Mid-Season Market Activity
The National Football League (NFL) saw a significant increase in trade activity among teams as the mid-season transfer window nears its close on November 5. This flurry of trades has been fueled primarily by movements amongst wide receivers, according to sources within the league.
One of the notable trades involved a key player moving from the Raiders to the New York Jets, alongside a trade from the Cleveland Browns to the Buffalo Bills. These changes have created a ripple effect, prompting teams to explore further options through trade negotiations with potential partners.
Sources reveal that amidst the current frenzy, several teams have inquired about the Los Angeles Rams‘ receiver, Cooper Kupp. The 1-4 Rams, struggling this season, face growing speculation about potentially trading Kupp, who is a staple for the team since their Super Bowl victory. Kupp has been recovering from an unspecified injury sustained on September 15 and was recently declared ineligible for play against the Las Vegas Raiders.
While the Rams might not yet be considering trades involving Kupp, a further string of losses could accelerate talks, particularly with upcoming games against the Raiders and undefeated Minnesota Vikings.
Cooper Kupp, the Super Bowl LVI MVP, is also financially tied to the Rams by a complex contract, presenting a challenge for any potential deal. The deal includes significant financial commitments, such as a $7.5 million roster bonus due in March, which would shift to an acquiring team, adding layers to any prospective negotiations.
Meanwhile, the Jets’ acquisition has pushed another wide receiver, Mike Williams, into the spotlight as a potential trade candidate. Interest has emerged from the Pittsburgh Steelers and Williams’ former team, the Los Angeles Chargers, as both weigh the benefits of adding his skills to their rosters.
In a separate development, Za’Darius Smith of the Cleveland Browns, focused on ending his team’s performance slump, has become the subject of trade speculations, with the Detroit Lions showing interest. The Lions’ potential interest follows an injury to their defensive end, Aidan Hutchinson, which has left the team exploring options to bolster their defensive line.
Smith expressed surprise regarding trade rumors but noted interest in potentially playing for the Lions. His hypothetical trade would also see him face his former teams, the Packers and Vikings, as part of the NFC North division rivalry.
