Red Sox Acquire Infielder Ryan Noda from Angels for Cash

BOSTON — The Boston Red Sox acquired first baseman and outfielder Ryan Noda from the Los Angeles Angels on Thursday, a move aimed at bolstering their roster following injury setbacks. Noda, 29, was traded for cash considerations after the Angels designated him for assignment just days prior.
Following the trade, the Red Sox optioned Noda to Triple-A Worcester. To create space on the 40-man roster, they transferred outfielder and designated hitter Masataka Yoshida to the 60-day injured list.
Noda’s journey to Boston includes a notable 2023 season with the Oakland Athletics, where he showcased his potential by hitting 16 home runs and posting a .229/.364/.406 batting line. However, he encountered difficulties in the following seasons, struggling with a .148 batting average at Triple-A this year.
The Red Sox’s need for a first base option became critical after losing Triston Casas to a season-ending injury on May 2. In recent weeks, players like Romy Gonzalez and Abraham Toro have temporarily filled the first base position, but none have truly excelled.
“Noda has proven he can hit in the majors, and he brings potential depth to the first base slot,” said a team source. The Red Sox will evaluate Noda during his time at Triple-A to determine if he is ready for a return to the major leagues.
The Angels claimed Noda off waivers after the 2024 season, but he did not make an impact this year. He struggled early on, leading to his designation for assignment. This trade represents a low-risk opportunity for Boston to explore Noda’s capabilities as they seek a long-term solution at first base.
“We’re hoping to help him find his rhythm again and capitalize on his past success,” a Red Sox spokesperson mentioned.
