Red Sox Aim for Strong Start Against Rangers: Tanner Houck Takes the Mound

ARLINGTON, Texas — The Boston Red Sox prepare to play the Texas Rangers at 8:05 p.m. ET Friday, marking their second game of the season following a successful Opening Day performance. Righthander Tanner Houck, coming off an All-Star season, takes the mound as Boston aims to build on their early momentum.
After breaking camp in Fort Myers, Florida, the Red Sox opened their season with a 9-3 win against the Rangers. Now, they hope to maintain that success at Globe Life Field, where Houck will make his first start of the year. ‘Honestly, pitch selection was horrible,’ said Red Sox manager Alex Cora, reflecting on Houck’s challenging spring training. ‘When we get there on Friday, it’s going to be a lot different.’
Houck, who signed a one-year $3.95 million deal after being eligible for arbitration, has shown promise in past seasons, boasting a 2.54 ERA before the All-Star break last year. However, he struggled during spring training, finishing with an 11.20 ERA over 13 2/3 innings.
‘The location of the slider was off. Location of the sinker was off. He doesn’t do that in the season,’ Cora added, expressing confidence in Houck’s ability to bounce back. The Red Sox roster features a strong lineup, including Jarren Duran, Rafael Devers, and Alex Bregman, who will look to capitalize on the Rangers’ pitching.
The Rangers will counter with righty Jack Leiter, making his season debut after finishing with a challenging 8.83 ERA last year. Leiter, drafted second overall in 2021, is still finding his footing in the major leagues. Cora noted his own players will be eager to face Leiter, who has never faced them before.
Stats show that Sox outfielder Wilyer Abreu has consistently performed against the Rangers, hitting six of his 19 career home runs against them. ‘It’s special stuff,’ catcher Connor Wong said of Houck’s potential. ‘He takes a lot of time working on it and preparing.’ The Red Sox will aim for solid pitching and offense to secure another victory.
First pitch is scheduled for 8:05 p.m. ET, and the game will be broadcast live on NESN and WEEI-FM 93.7. With expectations high, the Red Sox will seek a strong showing to build excitement within their fan base as the new season unfolds.
