Red Sox Eye Nolan Arenado and Ryan Helsley in Potential Blockbuster Trade
BOSTON — The Boston Red Sox are reportedly exploring a potential blockbuster trade with the St. Louis Cardinals that could bring both third baseman Nolan Arenado and closer Ryan Helsley to Fenway Park. The move, if finalized, would address two critical needs for the Red Sox: adding a powerful right-handed bat and bolstering their bullpen.
Arenado, an eight-time All-Star, has long been linked to Boston despite the team’s current depth at third base. His addition would significantly enhance the Red Sox’s infield defense and provide another offensive weapon in manager Alex Cora‘s lineup. Meanwhile, Helsley, one of baseball’s top closers, could solve Boston’s ongoing bullpen struggles. The 30-year-old right-hander led Major League Baseball with 49 saves in 2024 and has received Cy Young votes in two of the last three seasons.
“The Red Sox need impact players, and both Arenado and Helsley fit that description,” said a league source familiar with the discussions. “Adding Helsley would be a game-changer for their bullpen, especially with his track record of success.”
While the Cardinals have not publicly commented on trade talks, reports suggest there is tension between Helsley and the organization, potentially making him available. The Red Sox, who have yet to make significant bullpen upgrades this offseason, could see this as an opportunity to address multiple needs in one deal.
However, acquiring both players would likely require Boston to part with a substantial package of prospects or major league talent. “Including Helsley in a trade for Arenado would undoubtedly raise the price,” the source added. “But if the Red Sox are serious about contending, this could be a move worth making.”
With many free agents and trade targets already off the board, the Red Sox may view this as their best remaining option to improve their roster ahead of the 2024 season. The potential trade could reshape both teams’ fortunes, with Boston aiming to return to playoff contention and St. Louis potentially retooling for the future.
