Alex Bregman Mlb Free Agency 2025

BOSTON — The Boston Red Sox are locked in a high-stakes competition with division rival Toronto Blue Jays and the Detroit Tigers to secure free-agent third baseman Alex Bregman, one of the most sought-after players remaining in the MLB offseason market.

Bregman, a two-time All-Star and World Series champion, has drawn significant interest from multiple teams, but the Blue Jays are reportedly positioned to offer the most lucrative deal. ESPN‘s Buster Olney reported Thursday that Toronto’s “level of desperation” could lead them to outbid other suitors, including the Red Sox. “One of the execs speculates that in the end, the Jays are in a position to offer the most money,” Olney wrote.

The Red Sox, however, may have an edge in their ability to offer Bregman a chance to reunite with manager Alex Cora and play in one of baseball’s premier markets. Bregman’s agent, Scott Boras, is known for prolonging negotiations to secure the best possible deal, leaving the outcome uncertain. “The perception from some of the teams involved is that Scott Boras might simply be waiting for someone to get closer to the financial terms they wanted,” Olney added.

Bregman’s potential addition would address a critical need for the Red Sox, who are seeking to bolster their offense. While Boston’s starting rotation and bullpen have seen improvements this offseason, the lineup remains a work in progress. Bregman, a right-handed hitter, would provide balance and power, though questions about his defensive fit persist. Speculation has suggested he could transition to second base if signed by Boston.

The Red Sox are not alone in their pursuit. The Blue Jays and Tigers have also been linked to Bregman, with Toronto emerging as a formidable competitor. The Giants’ recent signing of Matt Chapman to a six-year, $156 million deal has set a benchmark for Bregman’s market value. “That is just about what the Astros offered,” Olney noted, referencing Houston’s initial offer before they moved on.

As the offseason progresses, the Red Sox face a critical decision: whether to meet Bregman’s financial demands or risk losing him to a division rival. With Boras at the helm of negotiations, the process could stretch into the final weeks before spring training. For Boston, the stakes are high, and the clock is ticking.
