Red Sox Adam Ottavino Release News

FORT MYERS, Fla. — The Boston Red Sox announced on Sunday the release of veteran right-hander Adam Ottavino, who decided to exercise an opt-out clause in his minor league contract after being informed he would not make the roster for the upcoming season.

Ottavino, 39, joined the Red Sox this spring, looking for a shot to return to the Major Leagues after three seasons with the New York Mets. His performance during spring training was underwhelming, culminating in a 10.80 ERA over five innings, although a significant portion of those runs were accrued in a single outing where he allowed six earned runs without recording an out.

“Decisions they have to make, and that’s what they decided,” Red Sox Manager Alex Cora said, referring to Ottavino’s and Moore’s choices regarding their contracts. “We’re always here to support them and help them make the right choices.”

Ottavino’s stint with the Red Sox in 2021 was more fruitful, where he posted a 4.21 ERA and helped the team reach the American League Championship Series. After declining a Major League offer over the winter, he signed with Boston, hoping for another chance in the big leagues.

Meanwhile, left-hander Matt Moore, who also had the option to opt out of his deal, has decided to remain with the organization and will report to Triple-A Worcester. Moore’s decision appears to be based on his desire to get back into game shape after a challenging spring that included a late arrival due to a stomach virus.

“It’s a long year,” Moore said. “My plan is to go and get a body of work going and try to get into a groove and get back to a better form than I’m in right now.”

Boston’s bullpen will feature key pitchers like Aroldis Chapman and Justin Wilson as they prepare for the season opener against the Texas Rangers on March 27. The desired strength in the bullpen is critical as they aim to improve upon last season’s 81-81 record.

“We feel confident in the guys we have in our bullpen,” said Cora, while also noting that if Moore performs well at Worcester, he could be considered for a call-up later in the season.

As the Red Sox finalize their roster, Ottavino now becomes a free agent looking for new opportunities, while Moore tries to remain relevant in the team’s future plans.
