Red Sox Sign Walker Buehler to Prove-It Deal Amid Injury Concerns
BOSTON, Mass. — The Boston Red Sox have signed free-agent pitcher Walker Buehler to a short-term contract, the team confirmed Tuesday, ending months of speculation about the former Los Angeles Dodgers star’s next destination. The deal, described as a “prove-it” contract, comes as Buehler looks to rebound from a series of injuries and inconsistent performances over the past two seasons.
Buehler, 29, expressed optimism about his future with the Red Sox during his introductory press conference. “I hope I’m good enough this year that I get to stay in Boston the rest of my career,” he said. His enthusiasm for the organization is notable, given the uncertainty surrounding his ability to return to peak form.
Since 2022, Buehler has struggled with injuries and performance, throwing just 140.1 innings with a 4.75 ERA. He missed the entire 2023 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery, and his strikeout rate plummeted to the lowest of his career. However, the Red Sox are banking on his potential to regain the form that made him one of baseball’s most dominant pitchers.
In 2021, Buehler’s last full season, he posted a 2.47 ERA and 0.968 WHIP over 200 innings, finishing fourth in National League Cy Young voting. He also excelled in the postseason, allowing no runs in three appearances during the NLCS and World Series. His career playoff ERA stands at 3.04, showcasing his ability to perform under pressure.
The Red Sox view Buehler as a high-upside addition to their rotation, with the potential to contribute significantly if he stays healthy. “We believe in Walker’s talent and his ability to bounce back,” said Red Sox Chief Baseball Officer Chaim Bloom. “This is an opportunity for him to prove himself and for us to see if he can be a long-term piece of our team.”
Buehler’s desire to remain in Boston long-term adds an intriguing layer to the deal. If he can recapture his 2021 form, the Red Sox could explore a contract extension. For now, both sides are focused on the upcoming season, with Buehler aiming to solidify his place in the rotation and help the team compete in the playoffs.
