Red Wings Ride Four-Game Win Streak Under New Coach Todd McLellan

The Detroit Red Wings have surged to a four-game winning streak under new head coach Todd McLellan, marking a dramatic turnaround since his hiring on Dec. 26, 2024. The team, which had struggled with a 13-17-4 record under former coach Derek Lalonde, has found renewed energy and focus under McLellan’s leadership.

McLellan, who previously coached the Edmonton Oilers and San Jose Sharks, emphasized simplicity and accountability in his early days with the team. Forward Tyler Motte noted that McLellan’s straightforward approach has helped the players regain their confidence. “We needed to take a step back to take a step forward,” Motte said. “He’s made things more clear-cut for us, and it’s paying off.”

The Red Wings’ penalty kill, a major weakness earlier in the season, has shown significant improvement under McLellan and assistant coach Trent Yawney. The unit has risen from a 68.8% success rate to 80% in the four games since McLellan took over. Goaltender Alex Lyon credited the new structure for the turnaround, saying, “It’s a bad feeling when you put a man in the box and feel uncomfortable. Now, we’re more confident.”

Despite the early success, McLellan cautioned that the team is still in the “work phase” of its transformation. “We’re counting on them playing faster, harder, and smarter,” he said. “Accountability comes into play now. We have to trust the path we’re laying out for them.”

The Red Wings face a critical test on Tuesday against the Ottawa Senators, a team that has historically given them trouble. McLellan acknowledged the challenge, saying, “The test will be how we respond to this feel-good time. Are we prepared to build on it, or are we going to give it back?”

With the team’s penalty kill improving and the power play clicking at a 53.9% rate during the winning streak, the Red Wings are poised to continue their upward trajectory. However, McLellan emphasized that the team’s identity is still evolving. “I think there’s pace and skill in our game, but we’re still inconsistent,” he said. “We need to become a more consistent team.”
