Detroit Red Wings Nhl Rookies Debut

DETROIT – Three young prospects made their NHL debuts as Detroit Red Wings faced the Montreal Canadiens on October 12, 2025. Michael Brandsegg-Nygård, Emmitt Finnie, and Axel Sandin-Pellikka earned spots on the Opening Night roster due to their impressive performances in the preseason.

Executive Vice President and General Manager Steve Yzerman expressed surprise at the trio’s readiness for the NHL. “Probably exceeded our expectations,” Yzerman said. Even though the players were expected to start in the AHL, they impressed during training camp and preseason games, which led the management to keep them.

This marked the first time since the 2018-19 season that the Red Wings had three players debut on Opening Night. In contrast, the last occurrence involved five players against the Columbus Blue Jackets.

Yzerman explained his approach to rookie placements, emphasizing the importance of evaluating young talent. “If we think they’re ready and we think they’re going to play, we’re more than happy to keep them,” he said, likening the situation to the successful rookie season of Lucas Raymond.

Fans have high hopes for the new players. Yzerman noted their impressive preseason performances, highlighting Finnie’s skating ability, Sandin-Pellikka’s poise, and Brandsegg-Nygård’s shooting ability. “It’s very exciting for everybody,” he said, sensing the energy they bring to the team.

Looking ahead, Yzerman expressed optimism for the Red Wings during their Centennial season, reinforcing that the core players and rookies alike hold significant potential. “I’m expecting more from the players that were here,” he said.
