Detroit, Michigan — The Detroit Red Wings find themselves in a precarious situation, having lost seven of their last eight games, yet displaying some competitive stretches during those matches. Despite proving to be the better team at times, their inability to secure points has placed pressure on the squad as they push through the final stretch of the season.

Captain Dylan Larkin expressed his frustration following Friday’s 4-2 defeat against the Carolina Hurricanes. “It’s hard to sit here and say you feel good about it when you’re not getting results this time of year, given the position we’re in,” Larkin told FDSN. “You’d like to play that way and get results.”

Friday’s loss served as a stark reminder for the Red Wings, who experienced a tumultuous second period, allowing three goals to Carolina after leading 1-0. Larkin characterized the performance as too much of a “rollercoaster,” admitting that lapses like that cannot occur if the team is to turn their fortunes around.

Head coach Todd McLellan echoed Larkin’s sentiments, outlining the need for a more consistent effort as the team approaches a critical matchup against the Vegas Golden Knights on Sunday afternoon. “We know what we’re going to face on Sunday, or maybe we don’t because we haven’t had our pre-scout,” McLellan said. “But our attempt at a win is going to have to be more consistent than it was here.”

McLellan stressed the importance of sustaining pressure throughout the entire game, noting, “It’s not the time of the year to play two periods. It’s the time to come up with three.”

In the game against the Hurricanes, forward Alex DeBrincat continued to be a bright spot for the Red Wings, scoring his 31st goal of the season—his fifth goal in the last eight games. “He seems to be a guy that we can count on every night,” McLellan remarked. “He usually isn’t at the scene of the crime defensively and offensively, he’s got some pop. He battles well, loosens up pucks for his teammates, and makes plays when he’s there.”

DeBrincat’s performance has been pivotal, recording two goals and three assists in the last two games, as well as accumulating 19 points, including ten goals, over his last 15 games. His contributions have been crucial to the team’s attempt to regain form.

Looking ahead, the Red Wings, with a record of 31-29-6, will face the Golden Knights, who stand at 39-19-7, for the first time this season at 1 p.m. at Little Caesars Arena. Vegas enters the match following a 4-3 overtime loss to the Buffalo Sabres and will be aiming to improve their recent record, which sits at 1-1-2 over their last four games. Notably, Golden Knights center Jack Eichel leads his team with 79 points this season, including 59 assists.

The upcoming game is crucial for the Red Wings as they seek to turn around their recent performance and secure much-needed points in the playoff race.
