As the NBA Finals prepare to tip off between the Boston Celtics and Dallas Mavericks, ESPN analyst JJ Redick found himself at the center of coaching rumors surrounding the Los Angeles Lakers. When asked about the speculation linking him to the Lakers’ coaching vacancy, Redick chose to keep his focus on the upcoming championship series.

During an appearance on GoJo and Golic, Redick deflected questions about the Lakers’ interest, stating, “My focus is on the NBA Finals.” He hinted that any discussions regarding his coaching future will only take place once the season concludes.

Shams Charania of The Athletic reported on Tuesday that Redick has emerged as the front-runner for the Lakers’ coaching position, with sources indicating he is the leading choice at this stage. However, ESPN’s Brian Windhorst tempered expectations, noting that while Redick’s hiring seems likely, it is not yet a finalized agreement.

The coaching search for the Los Angeles Lakers may extend into June, partially due to Redick’s commitments in covering the NBA Finals for ESPN. With the potential for the series to last until June 23, the timeline for any official announcement regarding Redick’s possible appointment remains uncertain.

Despite his current role in the media, Redick has reportedly been in discussions with the Lakers about potential coaching opportunities. While he navigates his broadcasting responsibilities during the Finals, preparations for his potential transition to coaching in Los Angeles are said to be underway.

In May, NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski revealed that candidates for Redick’s coaching staff had already surfaced, hinting at a proactive approach by the Lakers in shaping their future leadership under Redick’s potential guidance.

As Redick juggles his dual roles in the NBA Finals coverage and the Lakers coaching speculation, the basketball world eagerly awaits any developments that could see the former guard take on a new challenge in coaching one of the league’s most storied franchises.
