Scott Barlow Cincinnati Reds Bullpen Signing

CINCINNATI, Ohio — The Cincinnati Reds have signed reliever Scott Barlow to a one-year contract worth $2.5 million, a move aimed at enhancing their bullpen before the upcoming MLB season. The agreement, reported by Jesse Rogers of ESPN, is pending completion of a physical examination.

A 32-year-old right-hander, Barlow spent six seasons with the Kansas City Royals before brief stints with the San Diego Padres and Cleveland Guardians in 2023. Throughout his career, he accumulated a solid 3.49 earned run average (ERA) and collected 58 saves over 365 appearances, primarily as a reliever.

In the past two seasons, however, Barlow’s performance has seen a decline, evident in his 4.25 ERA and increased walk rates, particularly during his time with the Guardians last year. Despite these challenges, Barlow maintained a strikeout rate of over 27%, showcasing his ability to strike out hitters while also allowing 44 hits in 55 innings last season.

Barlow’s tenure with the Royals was marked by success, including a standout 2021 season where he notched a 2.42 ERA with 91 strikeouts across 74.1 innings. The following year, he saved 24 games, aligning him as a reliable option in the late innings. However, after being designated for assignment and released by the Guardians in September, the Reds offer marks a fresh start for Barlow.

“We believe Scott can be a crucial piece of our bullpen,” said Reds manager Terry Francona. “His experience and durability—never having been on the injured list—make him an ideal fit for our reshaped relief corps.”

Barlow, known for his durability, made at least 61 appearances in each of the last five complete seasons, a testament to his resilience. Since 2019, only a couple of relievers have appeared in more games than Barlow’s 359, and he leads all relievers with 372 innings pitched during that span.

As Barlow joins the Reds, he will likely slot into a setup role, supporting Alexis Díaz, who is expected to serve as the closer following a strong 2024 season. Other notable bullpen members include Tony Santillan, Brent Suter, and Taylor Rogers. The competition for the final bullpen spot will continue through spring training as the Reds prepare for the regular season.

Additional signings, such as Josh Staumont on a minor league deal with an invitation to spring training, further bolster the Reds’ pitching depth. Staumont brings his own set of skills, boasting a more favorable ground ball rate and the ability to limit home runs during his career.

With the acquisition of Barlow and the emergence of young talent, the Reds are positioning themselves as a formidable force, particularly in the National League. The changes in the bullpen signal a proactive approach as the team strives for a competitive edge heading into Opening Day.
