Reese Olson Shuts Down Padres in Tigers’ 6-0 Victory

DETROIT, Michigan – Reese Olson pitched 7 1/3 innings of shutout baseball, leading the Detroit Tigers to a 6-0 victory over the San Diego Padres on Wednesday at Comerica Park. Olson allowed only two hits and struck out seven batters, improving his season record to 3-1.
Justyn-Henry Malloy was a key player for the Tigers, hitting a home run and an RBI double. Dillon Dingler also contributed with a two-run homer in the eighth inning. The victory allowed the Tigers to secure the three-game series 2-1, marking their solid performance since the start of the season.
Olson’s strong performance included retiring 16 consecutive hitters after allowing a single to Jose Iglesias in the third inning. It was a stark contrast to the Padres’ struggling offense, which has gone 3-5 after a strong start to the season at 14-3.
San Diego’s Kyle Hart, who started for the Padres, struggled on the mound, giving up two runs on five hits over 4 1/3 innings. Despite their early chances, the Padres were unable to capitalize, as Fernando Tatis Jr. was thrown out attempting to steal third after reaching base on a fielding error.
The Tigers scored first with a home run from Gleyber Torres in the bottom of the first inning. They doubled their lead in the fifth with Malloy’s homer and then extended it further in the seventh with a combination of hits from Trey Sweeney and Greene, and ultimately Dingler’s two-run shot in the eighth.
Fernando Tatis Jr.’s on-base streak ended at 23 games during this match, highlighting a rare off day for the Padres. Manager Mike Shildt noted that performances like this are part of the game and urged fans to remain optimistic.
The Tigers will next host the Tampa Bay Rays for a three-game series starting Friday, while the Padres are set for a break before returning home to face the Rays.
