Around The Horn Farewell Episode

NEW YORK, NY – After 23 years and nearly 5,000 episodes, ESPN‘s “Around the Horn” is set to conclude its iconic run this Friday. Among the show’s many panelists, I hold the unsought title of the least successful participant, having never won an episode across my five appearances.

“Around the Horn” features a panel of four sports commentators who debate various topics under the supervision of host Tony Reali. Points are awarded based on the strength of arguments, with the highest scorer declared the winner. Out of the 60 panelists in the show’s history, I am one of just seven who have failed to secure a win, making my lack of success particularly noteworthy.

As the series wraps up, I reflect on this unique distinction with a sense of pride. My run on the show began in June 2003, after a year-long struggle with my self-doubt and inexperience in front of the camera. Despite practicing extensively and attempting to hone my TV presence, I found myself ill-prepared for the reality of live television.

Returning to the show in 2004, I experienced a mixture of relief and embarrassment. Fellow panelist Woody Paige remarked on my distinctive voice, likening it to Topo Gigio, a high-pitched puppet from the ’60s. While I took the comment in stride, it fueled my desire to alter my vocal presence, leading to comedic and misguided attempts to roughen my voice.

Despite my winless record, the journey taught me valuable lessons. Notably, while my peers went on to achieve significant successes, I embraced my role in the show’s legacy of nurturing diverse voices in sports media. As I reminisce over my time on “Around the Horn,” I appreciate an experience that, though yielding no victories, was rich in learning and camaraderie.

Before the finale, I visited the studio to express my gratitude to Reali. It was heartwarming to see familiar faces and remember the shared memories from years past. I walked away with a new perspective, realizing that my legacy on the show, while defined by losses, is also a testament to growth and resilience.
