Reign Face Angel City in Crucial NWSL Showdown Sunday Night

LOS ANGELES, March 29, 2025 – The Seattle Reign aim to extend their early-season success as they battle Angel City FC on Sunday, March 30, at 5 p.m. PT at BMO Stadium. This matchup will be streamed live on CBS Sports Network for U.S. viewers and NWSL+ for international audiences.
After achieving a draw and a win in their first two games, the Reign are determined to maintain their undefeated streak against Angel City, who are still seeking their first victory of the season.
The atmosphere at BMO Stadium, known for its energetic crowd, poses both challenges and opportunities for the visiting team. “It’s an electric environment with fans right up close to the field, which makes it fun, but also tough,” said Reign head coach Laura Harvey.
In a unique subplot, Harvey will face off against Sam Laity, Angel City’s interim head coach. Laity previously served as an assistant coach with the Reign from 2013 to 2022, which adds an additional layer of intrigue to the contest.
Despite facing injuries, including key players like Lynn Biyendolo and Jess Fishlock sidelined, the Reign are optimistic. Biyendolo recently shared on the Good Vibes podcast that her ankle injury occurred during training, but she is expected to return after the international break.
On the other side, Angel City forwards, particularly Alyssa Thompson, will likely pose a significant threat. Thompson, who has already scored this season, has ranked in the 83rd percentile for progressive carries among attacking players in the league. The Reign’s defense will have to be vigilant to limit her impact. “We need to ensure she doesn’t have time to dribble or shoot,” emphasized Harvey.
Angel City’s defense, bolstered by experienced centerback Sarah Gorden, who surpassed 10,000 NWSL minutes last week, will be a focal point. Gorden brings both leadership and speed, making her a formidable opponent for Reign’s attack.
Angel City has historically led the league in crosses but has shifted its strategy this season to focus more on leveraging speed and quick transitions. They currently lead in clearances with 75, while goalkeeper Angelina Anderson stands out as the league leader in saves with 13. “We aim to cut off their long balls early and implement a high press to control the pace of the game,” said Harvey.
Both teams have experienced mixed results thus far in their campaigns. Seattle finished last season at 13th in the league but has begun this year with renewed vigor. In contrast, Angel City has recorded only two draws from their opening matches and hopes to capitalize on their home advantage.
The Reign will have to rely on their younger players to step up in the absence of seasoned veterans. Rookie defenders like Jordyn Bugg and Madison Curry have started strong, with Bugg contributing to vital plays in previous matches.
As the Reign and Angel City prepare for this crucial match, both teams are primed for a highly competitive showdown. Fans of each club will be eager to see which team emerges victorious in what promises to be an exhilarating encounter.
