Reilly Smith Returns to Golden Knights in Major Trade from Rangers

LAS VEGAS, Nev. — In a surprising move that marks a reunion between a fan-favorite and his former team, the Vegas Golden Knights have acquired forward Reilly Smith from the New York Rangers. The trade, confirmed Thursday, involved the Golden Knights sending prospect Brendan Brisson and a 2025 third-round pick to New York while the Rangers retain 50% of Smith’s salary cap hit.
Smith, 33, previously won a Stanley Cup with Vegas in 2023. He spent six successful seasons with the team before being traded to the Rangers last summer as a salary-cap casualty.
This transaction comes as the NHL‘s trade deadline looms, with less than 24 hours remaining for teams to make moves to improve their rosters for playoff runs. Smith has tallied 10 goals and 29 points in 58 games this season, making him a valuable addition as the Golden Knights aim for another championship.
Golden Knights head coach Bruce Cassidy expressed optimism about Smith’s return, noting his familiarity with the team. “It’s a good addition for us,” Cassidy said. “He’s a veteran guy; he knows how we play, he knows the room, and he knows our expectations. We’re happy to have him back.”
Smith’s return addresses the Golden Knights’ pressing need for scoring depth, especially on the left side. “We needed scoring, and Smith is ol’ reliable in that department,” said Cassidy.
During his six years in Vegas, Smith established himself as one of the franchise’s key players, ranking third in all-time goals with 124. His contributions to the 2023 Stanley Cup victory can’t be overlooked, as he played a significant role throughout the playoffs.
The 2020 first-round draft pick Brisson struggled to find his footing in the NHL, appearing in only 24 games with the Golden Knights before being sent to the Rangers. “Brendan still has loads of potential, but that doesn’t fit the Golden Knights’ mold,” a league source said.
The deal indicates the Golden Knights’ commitment to immediate success as they prepare for the Stanley Cup playoffs. As the team currently ranks sixth in the league in scoring, adding Smith provides experienced depth and a known ability to make an impact.
“In terms of depth, Smith will slot in seamlessly,” Cassidy added. “It’s about balancing our lines out even more, and he can play on any of our four lines. He’s a cerebral player who plays in all situations.”
The Golden Knights aim to solidify their championship contention after a strong showing in the previous season. Smith now looks to contribute once again to the franchise he helped build during its early years. With the trade deadline nearing, teams are closely evaluating their playoff prospects, and this acquisition could prove pivotal for the Golden Knights.
As Smith steps back into the Golden Knights lineup, fans and players alike hope he can quickly regain his pre-trade form and help lead the team to another playoff run.
