Javier Dorado Real Madrid Football Player Obituary

BARCELONA, Spain — Javier Dorado, a former player for Real Madrid and champion of the 2000 UEFA Champions League, passed away on Thursday at the age of 48 after a prolonged battle with leukemia. The news has sent waves of sorrow throughout the football community, as numerous clubs recall his contributions and passion for the sport.

Dorado, a left-back who came through the ranks of Real Madrid’s youth academy, made his debut for the senior team on June 9, 1999, in a Copa del Rey match against Valencia. His tenure with the club lasted from 1999 to 2000, during which he appeared in eight official matches and celebrated the club’s eighth European title in Paris against Valencia in 2000.

The club released a heartfelt statement expressing their condolences: “Real Madrid C. F., its president, and its Board of Directors deeply regret the passing of Javier Dorado, a product of our academy and a player for our first team between 1999 and the year 2000. We wish to express our condolences and affection to his family, teammates, loved ones, and all the clubs he was part of.”

Post-Real Madrid, Dorado’s career spanned several clubs in Spain, including UD Salamanca, Sporting de Gijón, Rayo Vallecano, and RCD Mallorca. He was particularly notable during his time at Sporting, where he played 152 official matches and scored two goals.

Born in 1977 in Talavera de la Reina, Dorado’s international career included stints with the Spanish U21 team, featuring in the 2000 UEFA European Championship in Slovakia. Throughout his professional career, he played a total of 308 matches, primarily in Spain’s top divisions, and scored four goals.

After retiring in 2012 with Atlético Baleares, Dorado remained connected to football, engaging in local initiatives such as ‘Mallorca Legends’, and running youth camps to share his love for the game. However, his life took a drastic turn in 2019 when he was diagnosed with leukemia, a battle he faced with resilience despite the challenges.

Dorado was hospitalized at Hospital Universitario Son Espases awaiting a bone marrow transplant from his sister when he passed away. He previously stated, “My goal is to live day by day and enjoy every moment,” reflecting his positive outlook amid adversity.

In the wake of his death, expressions of grief poured in from various clubs he represented. Real Sporting de Gijón acknowledged his contributions, stating, “We deeply regret the loss of Javier Dorado, our former player. Our heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones.” RCD Mallorca and Atlético Baleares also extended their sympathies, honoring his legacy within Spanish football.

Javier Dorado’s legacy extends beyond his accomplishments on the field; he is remembered as a dedicated player whose impact resonated with fans and fellow athletes alike. May he rest in peace.
