Renowned Folk Singer and Actor Jimi Solanke Passes Away at 81
A beloved figure in the entertainment industry, Jimi Solanke, the veteran actor and folk singer, has passed away at the age of 81. The legendary poet and playwright died on Monday morning while being rushed from his country home in Ipara Remo, located in Remo North Local Government Area of Ogun State, to Babcock University Teaching Hospital in Ilisan. Unfortunately, he succumbed to a brief illness on the way.
Chief Solanke, popularly known as Uncle Jimi, had been in and out of the hospital since December. His passing has left a deep void in the hearts of his fans and the Remo North community. Honorable Dickson Awolaja, who represents Remo North State Constituency at the state Assembly, expressed his condolences and recognized the significant contributions of the highly gifted artiste to the development of their dear nation, Ogun State.
Jimi Solanke’s artistic journey began as a pioneering member of the Orisun Theatre Group, founded by the renowned Wole Soyinka, in 1961. Throughout his seven-decade career, he left an indelible mark on various platforms, from the Western Nigeria Television in the 1960s to international festivals in Senegal and Algeria during the 1970s. His versatility as an actor, poet, folk singer, and playwright was unparalleled.
Known for his memorable performances in plays like Kongi’s Harvest, Sango, and Shadow Parties, Jimi Solanke captivated audiences with his captivating stagecraft and theatrical brilliance. His talent brought him accolades and recognition both locally and internationally. The Oxford Times hailed him as a skilled Nigerian actor, and during a performance of Wole Soyinka’s Kongi’s Harvest, the New York Times recognized him as the star of an excellent troupe.
Aside from his remarkable acting skills, Solanke was also a phenomenal songwriter, performer, visual artist, and extraordinary storyteller. He seamlessly merged his acting prowess with musical delivery, earning him the title of an “actor-singer”. He had a unique ability to enchant audiences with his songs and performances.
In addition to his contributions on stage and screen, Jimi Solanke was the Founder and Artistic Director of Ibudo Asa in Ipara Remo, Remo North Local Government, Ogun State, Nigeria. His impact extended beyond his performances, leaving a lasting legacy that resonated in the hearts of all who had the privilege of witnessing his artistry.
Jimi Solanke is survived by his wife, Chief Mrs. Toyin Solanke. His passing marks the end of an era in Nigerian entertainment, leaving a void that will be felt for years to come. This cultural icon has left an indomitable imprint on the history of African arts and will be remembered for his invaluable contributions to the enrichment of the nation’s cultural heritage.
