John Feinstein Sports Journalist Obituary

MCLEAN, Va. — John Feinstein, a celebrated sportswriter and bestselling author known for his insightful coverage of various sports, has died at the age of 68. His brother, Robert Feinstein, confirmed that Feinstein passed away on March 13, though no cause of death has been disclosed.

Feinstein began his career at The Washington Post in 1977, initially serving as a night police reporter. He swiftly earned a reputation as a versatile sportswriter capable of tackling diverse topics, solidifying his place in the industry with his prolific writing. Throughout his career, he authored 44 books on topics ranging from basketball and football to golf and tennis — with notable works including “A Season on the Brink,” “A Good Walk Spoiled,” and “The Last Amateurs.”

His most recognized work, “A Season on the Brink,” published in 1985, followed the tumultuous season of Indiana basketball coach Bobby Knight, and became a bestseller, spending 17 weeks at number one. In addition to his adult nonfiction, Feinstein also created engaging stories for young readers, most notably the Benchwarmers series and The Sports Beat series.

At The Post, Feinstein’s colleagues praised his indefatigable work ethic. His coverage of Michigan State University basketball coach Tom Izzo exemplified his dedication to sports journalism, allowing readers insight into the world of college athletics.

Tributes poured in from across the sports media landscape following his passing. “I kept hoping this wasn’t true. John Feinstein has died suddenly. He was a legendary sportswriter and a close friend,” lamented Dick Weiss, while Gene Wang expressed, “John was an absolute titan in our industry who I admired from afar growing up reading his books and columns. I will miss his company greatly.”

Chad Steele reflected on his experience knowing Feinstein: “Getting to know John during the writing of his next book was one of the great honors of my professional life. Quick-witted and bluntly honest, I was fortunate to call him a friend for the last 20 years. This news is heartbreaking and will sting for a long time.”

Many journalists shared how Feinstein had a profound impact on their careers. “John Feinstein’s writing helped me fall in love with sports. His YA series about kid reporters inspired me to become a sports journalist,” remarked Ella Brockway.

Feinstein’s legacy includes not only his extensive body of work but also his ability to connect with readers and fellow journalists alike, leaving a lasting impression on the world of sports. His contributions will be remembered by many who had the privilege of being influenced by his work.
