Rhenish Girls' High School Student Melissa Müller Named Top Matric Pupil In South Africa

Melissa Müller, a talented student from Rhenish Girls’ High School in Stellenbosch, has been recognized as the top matric pupil in South Africa. Out of the 717,377 candidates who sat for the National Senior Certificate (NSC) exams last year, Melissa achieved an impressive seven distinctions and an overall average of 97.6%.

The 18-year-old aspiring engineer plans to study mechatronics engineering at the University of Stellenbosch. With a passion for maths and physics, Melissa has found her perfect fit in the field of biomedical engineering. She aims to use her degree to engineer medical devices for people in disadvantaged areas of the country.

Melissa’s academic excellence is matched by her dedication to sports. She is a first-team hockey and water polo player at Rhenish Girls’ High School. Despite her demanding schedule, Melissa always made time for her studies, even during tours with the hockey team.

As head of the academic pillar on the school’s learner council, Melissa exemplifies hard work and commitment. Her teachers and deputy headmaster, Rika Kroon, praise her work ethic and determination.

Melissa was among the matric pupils invited to a congratulatory breakfast hosted by Minister Angie Motshekga. The event celebrated the class of 2023’s success and the announcement of an 82.9% pass rate. The Free State retained its top position nationally with a pass rate of 89.03%.
