Rhode Island FC Prepares for Exciting 2025 Season After Historic Playoff Run

SMITHFIELD, R.I. — Following a historic run in their inaugural season, Rhode Island FC is poised for an exciting 2025 season in the USL Championship. The team captured attention last year by reaching the playoffs for the first time, and they look to build on that momentum starting March 15.
In their first match of the regular season on March 16, 2024, Rhode Island FC faced New Mexico United at Beirne Stadium, finishing in a 1-1 draw. The team’s first goal was credited as an own-goal, but Albert Dikwa quickly redeemed the scored ledger by netting the first official goal in franchise history in the second match against New Mexico, despite that also ending in a tie.
After earning their first victory against Las Vegas on April 20, where Stephen Turnbull and Noah Fuson scored, Rhode Island faced a challenging patch — losing three consecutive matches and drawing twice. However, they rebounded by holding league-leading Louisville City FC to a scoreless draw, a feat no other team accomplished. The Amber and Blue then surged back by defeating Louisville 5-2, marking a pivotal point in their season.
Rhode Island finished the regular season with a record of 12 wins, 7 losses, and 15 ties, placing fifth in the Eastern Conference. They embarked on a remarkable playoff journey, defeating Indy Eleven 3-2, Louisville City FC 3-0, and Charleston Battery 2-1 before ultimately falling to Colorado Springs in the championship match.
Head coach Khano Smith will return in 2025, having secured a multi-year extension. Defender Karifa Yao, honored as Rhode Island’s Defender of the Year in 2024, also returns after proving vital last season with significant contributions in minutes and defensive statistics. Yao tallied his first goal during the club’s encounter against Sacramento Republic FC.
Midfielder Noah Fuson, the league’s Golden Playmaker and Rhode Island’s Player of the Year, signed a new contract in January, ensuring his talents remain with the team. He led the league with 10 assists in 2024, contributing to an impressive total of 18 goal contributions during the season.
Defender Frank Nodarse also secured a multi-year contract extension following a robust season. He was among a small group of players who appeared in every match, showcasing his value both in defense and as a scorer.
In preparation for the 2025 season, Rhode Island announced several roster changes, including the departure of Morris Duggan and Jack Panayotou, who will return to their respective parent clubs. Additionally, defender Stephen Turnbull was transferred to Birmingham Legion FC.
The team has made headlines in the offseason with strategic acquisitions aimed at filling crucial gaps. They signed midfielder Maxi Rodriguez, a 2024 All-League First Team selection, who is expected to add significant offensive capability. Also joining the roster is Hugo Bacharach, the 2024 MLS SuperDraft first-round selection, who will bolster the forward line.
“We’re excited about our new players and believe they will strengthen our squad ahead of the upcoming season,” said Coach Smith. “Every player has a role to play, and we’re committed to building on last year’s success.”
Rhode Island FC will embark on a five-game road trip to start the season, kicking off against Charleston Battery on March 15, followed by matches against Phoenix, Loudoun, Oakland, and Detroit. The club will return home to Tidewater Landing for the season opener on May 3.
The team’s aspirations include a strong showing in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, where they aim to improve upon their early exit last season. They will enter this year’s tournament in the Third Round in mid-April.
Fans should also circle dates throughout the season, particularly in July, when Rhode Island hosts rival Hartford in two back-to-back matches.
