Richmond VFL has returned to form in a resounding manner, triumphing over arch-rivals Essendon in a thrilling Dreamtime at the ‘G showdown with a commanding 61-point victory.

The Tigers showcased a remarkable reversal from their previous game, where they suffered a massive 110-point defeat against Sandringham last week. The 20.7 (127) to 10.6 (66) win displayed Richmond’s newfound strength and resolve.

Leading the charge was stand-in co-skipper and Sir Doug Nichols Trophy winner for best afield, Joel Garner, who delivered a standout performance with 30 disposals, nine tackles, and seven clearances.

The Tigers’ offensive prowess was evident early on, as they showcased precision in front of goal, spreading their scoring load across eight different goalkickers before registering a behind.

In a closely contested first quarter, Tom Brindley stood out in the ruck, impressing with 24 disposals, 10 marks, 10 hit-outs, and five clearances in the absence of Samson Ryan and Sam Naismith.

Continuing their strong form, Kaleb Smith and Sam Davidson were instrumental in Richmond’s success, with Smith making a mark from half-back, tallying 23 disposals, five marks, and a goal.

Debutant Harry Scott also impressed with 19 disposals, four tackles, and four clearances, making his presence felt in the midfield.

Richmond’s dominance shone through in the third quarter, where they unleashed a five-goal rampage while keeping Essendon at bay, with tall forward Archie May wreaking havoc on the Bombers’ defense, finishing with four goals, 11 marks, and 17 disposals.

Heading into the final quarter with a 31-point buffer, the Tigers continued their onslaught, led by stand-in co-skipper Chad Harris, who played a pivotal role with 23 disposals, 10 marks, and three clearances.

In the final term, Richmond sealed the deal with seven goals, extending their lead to a final 61-point margin with late contributions from Nick Guiney, Matthew Coulthard, and Harrison White.

The win sees Richmond climb to ninth on the Smithy’s VFL Ladder, with their sights set on a showdown against Geelong Cats at GMHBA Stadium on June 1.

After claiming the Pat Cronin Medal last week, Garner’s stellar performance earned him the Best on Ground award, marking his second consecutive accolade.

Richmond’s resurgence and commanding victory against Essendon in Dreamtime at the ‘G solidifies their position in the VFL competition.
