Rickie Fowler Qualifies for The Open Championship at Memorial Tournament

DUBLIN, Ohio – Rickie Fowler secured his place in the 153rd Open Championship at Royal Portrush after finishing tied for seventh at the Memorial Tournament presented by Workday on Sunday.
Fowler, who was not otherwise exempt, earned the distinction as he was the highest finisher among non-exempt players. He finished at 1-under par 287, tying with Brandt Snedeker for seventh place. However, Fowler’s higher ranking in the Official World Golf Ranking clinched his ticket to The Open, as he started the week ranked 124th, compared to Snedeker’s 430th.
“This week still could have been a lot better, but a definite positive is going over to Portrush,” Fowler said after his round. “That’s one I’ve wanted on the schedule. I had a great time when we were there last and had a decent showing as well.”
Fowler’s moment came down to a tense finish on the last hole at Muirfield Village. After a bogey on the par-4 17th, Fowler missed the green on the 18th hole. Yet, he played a remarkable pitch shot to just 2 feet from the hole and made the par to match Snedeker’s score.
Outside the scoring area, Fowler celebrated with his wife Allison and their daughters, Maya and Nellie. The family posed with an Open flag, capturing a memorable moment.
Looking ahead, Fowler is focused on the upcoming U.S. Open, as he is not currently in the field. He intends to participate in the 36-hole qualifier at Kinsale Golf and Fitness Club in Columbus, Ohio, on Monday. “Long day tomorrow,” Fowler noted. “I’m excited for tomorrow. We went and drove the golf course earlier this week.”
Fowler, who has yet to win a major championship, has been working hard to regain his form after a challenging 2024 season. He missed cuts at both the Masters and the PGA Championship this year but recently posted three top-16 finishes, including a tie for 15th at the Truist Championship.
Although Fowler is still in pursuit of his first major win, his qualification for The Open is a significant achievement, adding momentum to his season. “I’m in a lot better spot now versus earlier in the year,” Fowler said. “Been fighting hard, putting in a lot of work, and trying to stay as patient as possible.”
As he plans for his 14th Open Championship appearance, Fowler holds a positive outlook on the upcoming challenges ahead.
