Rickie Fowler Shines with 7-Under 63 at Truist Championship

FLOURTOWN, Pa. — Rickie Fowler turned heads at the Truist Championship on Thursday, shooting a remarkable 7-under 63 that has him tied for third place, just two shots off the lead. The performance comes after Fowler received significant attention for being granted a sponsor exemption into this week’s event and next week’s PGA Championship.
Fowler, who is ranked 125th in the FedExCup and Official World Golf Ranking, expressed that negative comments surrounding his invitation motivated him to perform better. “You obviously want to come out and prove yourself,” Fowler said. “The negative stuff, I would say, kind of helps me in a way because it fuels me to kind of go out and prove people wrong.”
The Philadelphia Cricket Club hosted the Truist Championship this year, moving from Quail Hollow Club where the PGA Championship will take place next week. Fowler’s strong performance follows a year of fluctuating success, where his best finish has been tied for 18th at the Cognizant Classic.
On Thursday, Fowler participated alongside fellow competitors, including first-round leader Keith Mitchell, who shot a stunning 61. Fowler’s round included eight birdies, with one bogey, showing he is still a strong contender on tour.
Competition was fierce, with players like Sam Stevens and Erik van Rooyen also in the mix. Stevens qualified for the Truist Championship with a solid showing at THE CJ CUP, and Van Rooyen earned his spot through the Aon Swing 5 qualifying series.
Fowler hopes to continue his successful start at the Truist Championship. “A number of exemptions this year, which I’m very, very happy for and appreciate it from the sponsors and the tournament directors,” he noted, emphasizing his intention to capitalize on these opportunities.
Historically, Fowler has made his mark at Quail Hollow, where he secured his first PGA Tour victory in 2012. As he looks to reclaim his form, he recalls the time he faced criticism as one of the most overrated players on tour, turning that energy into a win at The Players Championship in 2015.
As the tournament unfolds, Fowler remains focused, looking to eliminate distractions and play his best golf. “My body’s feeling better, kind of allowing me to go play golf,” Fowler said after making adjustments to his equipment. With a newfound confident stance, Fowler aims to silence his critics and compete fiercely in the upcoming rounds.
