Igor Jesus, at just 23 years old, is poised to start as the center-forward for the Brazilian national team against Chile this Thursday. This opportunity comes a little over three months since he debuted for Botafogo, surprising many in the football community with his rapid ascension.

Jesus, relatively unknown before joining Botafogo in July, quickly claimed a starting position against seasoned competitor Tiquinho Soares. His remarkable performance caught the attention of Artur Jorge, earning him the trust and confidence as a reliable striker.

In his brief stint with Botafogo, Jesus managed to impress by scoring seven goals and delivering one assist in 19 matches, leading to his selection by coach Dorival JĂşnior for the national team. His skills as a powerful and fast center-forward, with adept finishing abilities, have made him a remarkable asset on the field.

Trained in Brazil’s hinterlands, Jesus began his career in Cuiabá’s Brazil Central project before being scouted to Coritiba in 2014. Bernard Franco, now a professional coach in Cuiabá, recalls discovering Jesus’ unmatched maturity and understanding of the game for his age.

“Igor was a precocious talent, exhibiting impressive movement and positioning during games,” Franco mentioned to ge. “His growth in technical and tactical understanding set him apart, even beyond peers who questioned his early physical dominance,” he added.

Jesus’ journey saw him rise through the ranks rapidly, making a notable impact in youth and professional football. After a shining stint with Coritiba’s youth teams, he debuted in the professional league at 17, scoring his first goal shortly thereafter against Athletico Paranaense.

His path also led him abroad to Shabab Al Ahli, before returning to Brazil where his capabilities were quickly recognized by the national team selectors, culminating in his call-up for the Chile match.

Despite a disciplinary setback at 13, Jesus’ strong character and determination, along with encouragement from mentors like Delrik Brunne, enabled him to refocus and commit fully to a career in football. Jesus’ mother, Dianna, enforced a strong work ethic, prioritizing education alongside sports, shaping him into the disciplined athlete he is today.

As Jesus steps onto the international stage, his blend of humility, tenacity, and focus makes him a standout player, marking what fans hope will be the first of many appearances for Brazil.
