Robert Saleh Joins Green Bay Packers in Consulting Role After Jets Firing
Former New York Jets head coach Robert Saleh has swiftly returned to the NFL, joining the Green Bay Packers in a consulting capacity just over two weeks after his dismissal from the Jets. Saleh was observed at the Packers’ practice on Wednesday, marking a quick turnaround for the coach who was fired by the Jets on October 8 following a 2-3 start to the season.
Saleh’s new role with the Packers is described as “fluid” by Packers coach Matt LaFleur, who has a long-standing friendship and professional history with Saleh. The two coaches first worked together as graduate assistants at Central Michigan University in 2004 and later reunited with the Houston Texans in 2008. LaFleur has credited Saleh for helping him break into the NFL coaching ranks, and their close relationship includes LaFleur serving as the best man at Saleh’s wedding.
Despite his defensive background, Saleh will be working with LaFleur and the Packers’ offensive staff to provide a defensive perspective. This unique role reflects the trust and respect between the two coaches, as well as Saleh’s reputation as a highly regarded defensive strategist in the league.
Saleh’s presence at the Packers’ practice does not indicate an official hiring, but it suggests he may be exploring a new opportunity. LaFleur is expected to address the media regarding Saleh’s role, and it is possible that Saleh will continue with the team for the remainder of the 2024 season.
This move also highlights Saleh’s potential for future coaching roles. Many teams in need of a defensive coordinator in 2025 are likely to consider him, given his experience and the positive narrative that his early departure from the Jets has created.
