Roberto Romero, a 24-year-old Mexican fighter, has stepped in on short notice to make his UFC debut against David Onama at UFC 309. This sudden opportunity arose after Onama’s original bout with Lucas Almeida was canceled due to injury.

Romero, known by his nickname “El Charro Negro,” has a professional record of 8-3-1, with three wins by knockout and two by submission. He has five first-round finishes and has won seven of his last nine bouts. Despite his impressive record in regional circuits in Mexico, this fight marks a significant step up in competition for Romero.

The fight is scheduled to take place on the preliminary card of UFC 309, which is being held at Madison Square Garden. The event will be broadcast live on ESPN+ in the United States and TNT Sports in the UK. Onama and Romero are expected to walk out to the octagon at 8:10 PM ET (5:10 PM PT) on Saturday, November 16, 2024.

David Onama, with a record of 12-2, is known for his aggressive and entertaining fighting style. He has won his last two fights, including a unanimous decision victory over Jonathan Pearce in April. Onama is favored to win the fight, with many predicting a stoppage victory due to his strong striking and takedown defense.

Romero, who holds a Jiu-Jitsu Brown Belt and a Limalama Black Belt, has expressed his readiness for the fight despite the short notice. He has a strong amateur background, having been a two-time full contact national champion in Mexico and a two-time national champion in IMMAF tournaments.
