Rockets Eye Antetokounmpo as Suns Consider Roster Changes

PHOENIX, Arizona — The Phoenix Suns‘ lackluster 36-46 finish in the 2024-25 NBA season has triggered a roster overhaul, as current playoff teams are scrutinized for potential talent acquisitions. While changes in the coaching staff are underway, attention now turns to players like Jalen Green of the Houston Rockets.
Tim McMahon of ESPN reported today on the Rockets’ situation, indicating the team might need to evaluate their strategy of internal player development. Houston currently trails 3-1 against the Golden State Warriors in their playoff series, raising questions about their approach moving forward.
Green, who is experiencing his first playoff run, has expressed how overwhelming the experience has been. Despite this, he remains a player with potential, drawing comparisons to Suns star Devin Booker. McMahon noted, “Green’s career statistics are similar to Booker’s after four seasons, but Booker was established as an elite scorer much earlier.”
Fred VanVleet, the Rockets’ point guard, echoed McMahon’s thoughts on Green’s potential, saying, “He has the talent. There’s no reason for him not to reach that level. He’s got to go through it; he’s got to fail.”
As the offseason approaches, Green may become a valuable trade asset for the Suns if they consider trading Kevin Durant. His recent three-year, $106 million extension with the Rockets makes him a prime candidate for trade discussions.
Amidst this speculation, another potential target for the Rockets has emerged: Giannis Antetokounmpo. With the Milwaukee Bucks down 2-1 in their series against the Indiana Pacers, the scenario of Antetokounmpo seeking a new team is becoming increasingly realistic. At 30, he is perceived as a better long-term investment than Durant, who is 36 and approaching the end of his career.
While both players could significantly elevate the Rockets’ competitiveness, the decision will largely depend on the Bucks’ playoff performance. If Milwaukee fails to advance, Houston may consider pursuing Antetokounmpo, complicating their roster overhaul plans.
With young talents like Green and Alperen Sengun in development, the Rockets are on an upward trajectory. Acquiring a player like Antetokounmpo could accelerate their rebuilding efforts, creating a sustainable window for championship contention.
