Rockets Eye Contract Extensions for VanVleet and Adams This Offseason

HOUSTON, Texas — The Houston Rockets are looking to solidify their roster this offseason with potential contract extensions for guard Fred VanVleet and center Steven Adams. According to Sam Vecenie from The Athletic, VanVleet could sign a three-year deal worth between $90 million and $100 million, while Adams might expect a similar contract in the range of $42 million to $45 million.
Vecenie expressed that a new deal for VanVleet would decrease his annual salary from $44.9 million next season to just above $30 million. This move would allow the Rockets to save significant funds while also locking in more guaranteed money for VanVleet. “Adams would basically take up the money you’re saving by redoing Fred’s deal,” Vecenie noted.
Following a successful 52-30 season that placed them second in the Western Conference, the Rockets are focusing on keeping their core intact. The team’s management has shown optimism about negotiating extensions with both players, especially since they are anticipated to operate above the salary cap due to raises for Alperen Sengun and Jalen Green.
As the Rockets plan for the future, they hope to initiate discussions with VanVleet and Adams immediately after the conclusion of the 2025 NBA Finals. The ideal scenario would be reaching agreements before June 30, when negotiations can begin with external free agents.
In addition to internal negotiations, the Rockets are keeping an eye on potential acquisitions as free agency approaches. Veteran Al Horford, entering free agency at age 39, is seen as a potential fit for the Rockets. He proved instrumental for the Celtics in recent years and could provide the team with valuable experience.
Horford’s benefit would include his versatility and ability to stretch the floor, particularly playing alongside Sengun, thus enhancing the team’s offensive capabilities. With their financial flexibility, the Rockets may be able to offer him a better deal than the Celtics can provide.
Meanwhile, as they aim to fill out their roster, the Rockets are determined to ensure that their rebuilding strategy transitions into a win-now approach. The contracts of VanVleet and Adams will play a critical role in shaping this offseason and determining Houston’s competitiveness in the coming years.
