Houston Rockets Golden State Warriors Nba Playoffs

HOUSTON, Texas — The Houston Rockets find themselves in a precarious position, down 3-1 in their first-round playoff series against the Golden State Warriors after a narrow 109-106 defeat last night in San Francisco. With their backs against the wall, the Rockets face a must-win game at home on Wednesday.

In the series, Houston has struggled with their shooting, posting a field goal percentage of just 41.3% and a meager 33% from three-point range. Game 1 was particularly rough, featuring an abysmal 20.7% shooting from beyond the arc. The team’s guards have faced significant challenges in contributing offensively, making it crucial for Houston to find solutions fast.

IME Udoka, the Rockets’ head coach, may need to lean on the bench more to address these shooting woes. Rookie guard Reed Sheppard, who was drafted 3rd overall in the 2023 draft for his shooting ability, could see more playing time after showing promise late in the regular season.

Sheppard finished his final three games of the regular season shooting an impressive 50% from three-point range. Houston’s defense has been consistent, but the offense is in dire need of revitalization. For the Rockets to survive, Sheppard’s shooting skills could be vital in the upcoming game.

Fred VanVleet stepped up in Game 4, scoring 25 points and hitting eight threes, showcasing he still has a vital role in the team’s survival. However, Jalen Green, despite being the leading scorer, has struggled to maintain consistency under pressure, particularly when matched against Warriors defenders Jimmy Butler and Draymond Green.

“We need to find ways to exploit their defense, especially if we can get Sheppard some open looks,” said Udoka. “It’s crucial that we capitalize on every opportunity.”

Green, who had a breakout performance with 38 points in Game 2, failed to score in the fourth quarter of Game 4, making him question whether he can deliver when it matters most. With the series shifting back to Houston, the Rockets must find a way to exploit their home-court advantage and keep their playoff hopes alive.

Rockets’ management remains optimistic about their young stars’ abilities. General Manager Rafael Stone commented, “We’re not putting limits on our players. We want to see who can become the players we need for a championship.” The upcoming game could be pivotal, not just for their season but for the future direction of the franchise.

The Rockets have the opportunity to draw from their home crowd’s energy, and future success depends on their ability to make adjustments and deliver under pressure.
