HOUSTON, Texas — The Houston Rockets announced several key players will miss games this week as they prepare for matchups against the Phoenix Suns and Golden State Warriors. Head coach Ime Udoka confirmed that reserve players Tari Eason and Steven Adams will play on Wednesday but will be sidelined for Thursday’s game against the Warriors.
In a press conference before Sunday’s game against the Toronto Raptors, Udoka provided an update on the team’s injury status. The Rockets have faced increasing challenges with player availability, as they entered the weekend amidst a six-game losing streak.
“It’s been tough. We’re doing our best to manage the roster given these injuries,” Udoka stated. “We’re particularly cautious with the guys who have had significant injuries in the past.”
Steven Adams is dealing with left ankle soreness, which has become more of a concern following his extended playtime in recent games. After returning from knee surgery that cost him the entire previous season, the Rockets are intent on not overworking him.
“We want to ensure he stays healthy in the long run. His experience is invaluable to this team,” Udoka added.
Tari Eason, who has not played on back-to-back days since mid-January due to a prior leg injury, will also sit out Thursday after participating against Phoenix. The team is taking extra precautions because Eason’s current issue involves the same leg that required season-ending surgery last March.
As both players rest, Cam Whitmore is expected to step up and take on greater responsibility against Golden State. The Rockets are also counting on the frontcourt reserves, including Jock Landale, Jae’Sean Tate, and Jeff Green, to fill the gaps left by Adams and Eason.
In addition to Adams and Eason, the Rockets are managing injuries to key players Fred VanVleet and Jabari Smith Jr. VanVleet has missed the last five games due to an ankle sprain, and Udoka indicated that his return might not occur until after the All-Star break. Jabari Smith Jr. is currently limited to non-contact shooting drills as he recovers from a broken hand.
Despite the injuries, the Rockets are looking to regain momentum against the Timberwolves on February 6. Houston will need all players to step up as they wrap up their stretch before the All-Star break.
