Rockets Surge as Nets Face Uphill Battle in NBA Showdown
HOUSTON, Texas — The Houston Rockets, one of the NBA‘s most surprising teams this season, continued their impressive run with a narrow loss to the Memphis Grizzlies on Thursday night. The Rockets, now positioned as a strong contender for homecourt advantage in the playoffs, will face the Brooklyn Nets on Saturday night at 8 PM ET.
The Nets, coming off a dominant 21-point victory over the Charlotte Hornets, face significant challenges. Key players Cam Thomas, Cam Johnson, De’Anthony Melton, Maxwell Lewis, Bogan Bogdanovic, and Noah Clowney are sidelined, while Dariq Whitehead remains with Long Island. The Rockets, meanwhile, are dealing with injuries to Jabari Smith (left metacarpal fracture) and Alperen Sengun (questionable with a left calf contusion).
Houston’s success this season has been fueled by the emergence of young stars like Amen Thompson and Jalen Green. Thompson, despite his limited 3-point shooting, has been a catalyst for the team’s offense and defense. “The biggest argument against Amen becoming a permanent starter is his lack of 3-point shooting,” noted Nick Stevenson, a Rockets analyst. “However, the Rockets are shooting nearly 40 percent from the three-point line since Amen has become a starter in Smith Jr.’s absence.”
Jalen Green, the No. 2 pick in the 2021 NBA Draft, is also showing signs of fulfilling his potential. In January, Green averaged close to 26 points per game on 47/44/89 shooting splits. “Green keeps showing what he can do,” said one analyst. “The only question has been can he do it on a consistent basis.”
The Rockets’ resurgence has been a team effort, with head coach Ime Udoka drawing praise for his leadership. After Thursday’s game, Udoka reflected on a crucial play: “The final play was drawn up for Amen Thompson. They cut off his path, and he kicked it to Fred for the final shot,” he said.
For the Nets to pull off an upset, they will need a standout performance from Nic Claxton. The Rockets lead the NBA in rebounding this season, and if Sengun returns, they will feature one of the league’s top ten rebounders.
As the trade deadline approaches, the Rockets’ future looks bright. With a young core of Thompson, Green, and Sengun, all aged 22, Houston is poised to be a formidable force in the league for years to come. The Nets, meanwhile, hope to emulate the Rockets’ blueprint for success by making smart trades, building organically, and hiring the right coach.
The game will be broadcast on YES Network and WFAN radio, with tip-off scheduled for 8 PM ET.
