Rockies Aim to Avoid Sweep as Offense Struggles in Philadelphia

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. — The Colorado Rockies (1-4) are looking to avoid a series sweep against the Philadelphia Phillies (4-1) in the rubber match of a three-game set on Thursday. After suffering a lackluster 5-1 defeat on Wednesday, the Rockies are hoping for an offensive turnaround as they prepare for their home opener at Coors Field on Friday.
The Rockies’ bats have been quiet throughout the series, scoring only two runs, both from a home run by catcher Hunter Goodman. They faced a staggering 27 strikeouts and managed just six walks over the first two games.
Kris Bryant, who finally recorded his first hit of the season, is batting just 1-for-14. Ezequiel Tovar and Michael Toglia have also struggled, posting averages of .150 and .053 respectively. Rockies manager Bud Black emphasized, “We need our hitters to step up. We can’t continue to rely on our pitching alone.”
Meanwhile, the Rockies’ pitching staff, particularly the starters, has showcased impressive numbers with a 1.61 ERA. Antonio Senzatela (0-0, 0.00 ERA) is expected to keep this momentum going as he takes the mound for Colorado. His last outing was historic despite allowing nine hits, as he managed to escape without giving up any runs, thanks in part to exceptional defensive support.
The Phillies counter with right-hander Taijuan Walker, who is set to make his first start of the season after a rough 2024 campaign where he posted a 7.10 ERA. Walker’s struggles in spring training raised concerns, but he has historically demonstrated the ability to generate strikeouts.
First pitch is scheduled for 11:05 a.m. MDT, with coverage available on Rockies.tv and KOA 850 AM/94.1 FM. As both teams prepare for the final game in this series, the Rockies hope to find their rhythm at the plate to avoid a disappointing sweep.
