Rockies Avoid Historic Low with Ninth-Inning Win over Giants

DENVER — The Colorado Rockies secured a much-needed victory on Thursday night, defeating the San Francisco Giants 8-7 and avoiding a record for the worst start in modern baseball history. Orlando Arcia‘s two-run single in the bottom of the ninth inning helped the Rockies improve their season record to 13-55, tying them with the 1932 Boston Red Sox for the worst start recorded.
Fans and players alike are aware of the looming record but choose not to focus on it. “We look at it,” said Ryan McMahon, who played a crucial role by drawing a walk and scoring the winning run. “I know it to a ‘T.’ I think we all do, man.”
After starting the season with a dismal 9-50 record, the Rockies have managed to find their footing under interim manager Warren Schaeffer, winning four of their last nine games after breaking a five-game losing streak. “I think we are just playing better baseball,” McMahon continued. “As long as you focus on that when you are out in the field, the record takes care of itself.”
McMahon acknowledged the challenges of their poor start, describing it as “bad, man.” He emphasized the importance of daily focus, stating, “You want to just focus on what you are doing every day when you get here and keep trying to win more games.”
Arcia, who joined the Rockies on May 28 after being released by the Atlanta Braves, shared his perspective on the team’s future. “We’re not focusing on what happened in the past,” he said. “We’re taking it day by day. I told my people I came here to do a job, and to come out and play and help this team win however I can.”
