Rockies Seek Revival as Nationals Visit Coors Field This Afternoon

DENVER, Colo. — The Colorado Rockies (3-15) look to bounce back from a disappointing road trip as they host the Washington Nationals (7-12) on Saturday at Coors Field. Scheduled for a 2:10 PM MDT first pitch, the Rockies are eager to improve their performance after an 0-6 stretch on the road.
Inclement weather delayed the start of the series, originally set for Friday. Now, with the doubleheader looming on Sunday, this matchup against the Nationals becomes crucial for both teams. The Rockies are struggling offensively, having recently fired hitting coach Hensley Meulens, and are hoping that new hitting coach Clint Hurdle can inspire their young hitters despite it being his first time back in a Rockies uniform since 2009.
“It may take some time, but we believe we can turn things around,” said Hurdle. “These young athletes have potential, and I’m here to help them realize it.”
The Rockies will start right-hander Chase Dollander (1-1, 5.06 ERA) in what marks his third career start, and his second at Coors Field. Dollander showed promise in his last outing against San Diego, where he pitched 5 2/3 innings, allowed two runs on three hits, and notched seven strikeouts. However, he has given up four home runs in just ten hits allowed this season.
“I feel good about my strikeout stuff, but I need to limit the long balls,” Dollander said on his approach ahead of the game.
Facing Dollander will be Nationals left-hander MacKenzie Gore (1-2, 3.52 ERA), who has been consistent thus far, averaging six innings in most of his starts this season. In his last appearance against the Miami Marlins on April 13, Gore allowed four runs on eight hits.
“We’re all looking to get back on track after a rough patch,” Gore commented, highlighting the team’s focus on performance. “The Rockies are a tough opponent at home, and we need to bring our best game.”
The Rockies will enter the game without two key players: shortstop Ezequiel Tovar is on the injured list, and outfielder Brenton Doyle is on the bereavement list. Their absence puts added pressure on established hitters like Ryan McMahon and Michael Toglia.
“Next man up is our motto,” McMahon said regarding the adjustments. “We have good depth, and it’s about stepping up when needed.”
As the Rockies aim to revitalize their offense at home, the Nationals are equally motivated, having lost three out of four games in Pittsburgh. James Wood will lead off for the Nationals after a quieter period at the plate. Jose Tena will make a rare start at third base, filling in for Amed Rosario.
The stage is set for a crucial game at Coors Field with fans eager to witness how the Rockies respond to the recent changes within the organization. The first pitch is slated for 2:10 PM MDT, and the game will be broadcast on Rockies TV and KOA 850 AM/94.1 FM.
