DENVER, Colorado — The Colorado Rockies are off to a historic start in Major League Baseball, suffering their 42nd loss of the season Thursday, falling 2-0 to the Philadelphia Phillies at Coors Field. This defeat marks the Rockies’ record for the worst 50-game start in modern MLB history, with a current record of 8-42.

Before tonight, the last team to start this poorly was the 1895 Louisville Colonels, who began their season 7-43. If the Rockies continue on this path, they are projected to lose 136 games this season, surpassing the record of 134 losses set by the 1899 Cleveland Spiders.

In the game, Phillies pitcher Ranger Suárez shut down the Rockies offense, throwing 6⅔ innings, allowing only four hits, striking out six. His performance contributed to the Phillies’ ninth win in their last 11 road games. The team now holds a 32-18 record, boasting the best 50-game performance in the National League this year.

Germán Márquez took the mound for Colorado, giving up two runs — one earned — while striking out five over seven innings. After the game, Márquez expressed confidence in the team’s ability to improve, saying, ‘I feel like every day is our day, and we have to go out there and do the best to win.’

The Rockies had multiple chances to score but finished 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position, including a missed opportunity in the second inning when Brenton Doyle tripled. Colorado has now been shut out eight times this season and made 45 errors through 50 games, the most since the 2019 Seattle Mariners.

Looking ahead, the Rockies will face off against the New York Yankees in a three-game series starting Friday, aiming to snap a five-game losing streak and avoid further deepening their historic slump.
