Ron Coote Elevated to Rugby League Immortal Status
The South Sydney Rabbitohs have announced the elevation of Ron Coote AM to Rugby League Immortal status, becoming the 14th player to receive this prestigious honor.
This recognition took place during the NRL Hall of Fame ceremony held at the Sydney Cricket Ground on the evening of August 21, 2024.
Born in Kingsford, within South Sydney territory, Coote is widely regarded as one of the most decorated players in rugby league history. He made his first grade debut for South Sydney against Eastern Suburbs in 1964, playing a total of 148 first grade games for the club until 1971.
During his career with the Rabbitohs, Coote participated in six first grade Grand Finals, securing Premiership victories in 1967, 1968, 1970, and 1971. He later joined Eastern Suburbs, where he won two additional Premierships.
In addition to his club success, Coote represented Australia 23 times in international Tests, captaining the national team on three occasions. His achievements also include playing 15 matches for New South Wales and participating in three World Cup campaigns.
Coote has received numerous accolades, including induction into both the NSWRL and International Hall of Fame, as well as being a member of the Australian Rugby League Team of the Century.
He founded the Men of League Foundation to assist individuals connected to rugby league facing difficult times, demonstrating his ongoing commitment to the sport beyond his playing days.
The Chairman of the Rabbitohs, Nicholas Pappas AM, paid tribute to Coote, highlighting his impact on the game and the character he embodies as a sporting legend.
Coote expressed his gratitude upon receiving the Immortal honor, reflecting on the profound influence rugby league has had on his life.
