Mike Sainristil Nfl Interception Washington Commanders

DETROIT, Mich. — With 35 seconds left in the first half of the NFL playoff game between the Detroit Lions and Washington Commanders, rookie cornerback Mike Sainristil made a game-changing play. Quarterback Jared Goff, driving down 10 points, targeted wide receiver Jameson Williams, but Sainristil stepped in for his third interception of the season, halting the Lions’ momentum.

Sainristil, a former Michigan Wolverine, has been a standout in his rookie year. The second-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft has already tallied 93 tackles, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery, and three interceptions. His performance against the Lions included five tackles and the critical interception, further solidifying his impact on the Commanders’ defense.

“He’s been a revelation for us,” said Washington head coach Ron Rivera. “His ability to read the game and make big plays is exactly what we hoped for when we drafted him.”

Sainristil began his college career as a wide receiver before switching to cornerback in 2022. The transition proved successful, as he earned All-American honors and helped Michigan secure a national championship in his final season. Now in the NFL, he has seamlessly adapted to playing both nickel and cornerback positions.

Goff, who entered the playoffs on a hot streak, struggled against Washington’s defense, throwing two interceptions, including a pick-6. Sainristil’s interception marked a turning point in the game, as the Commanders capitalized on the turnover to extend their lead.

“I just trusted my instincts and made the play,” Sainristil said after the game. “It’s all about preparation and being ready when your number is called.”

With his consistent performances, Sainristil is proving to be one of the steals of the 2024 draft. His ability to contribute in multiple roles has made him a key piece of Washington’s defensive strategy as they advance in the playoffs.
