Rookie Zeev Buium Debuts with Minnesota Wild Amid Playoff Push

ST. PAUL, Minn. — Zeev Buium officially joined the Minnesota Wild on April 14, 2025, signing a three-year entry-level contract after an impressive collegiate career at the University of Denver. The 19-year-old defenseman, a 2024 first-round draft pick, made his first appearance with the team during practice, where a playful prank from goalie Marc-André Fleury lightened the atmosphere.
Buium’s college career concluded with two seasons at Denver, where he became a standout player, earning accolades such as All-American honors, NCHC Player of the Year, and a spot as a Hobey Baker finalist. Coach John Hynes praised Buium’s experience and leadership qualities. “He’s a really well-spoken kid, and he’s been a captain at the levels he’s been at,” Hynes said.
The rookie expressed excitement about joining the team, describing the transition as akin to the first day of school. After practicing with the Wild, Buium emphasized the importance of stepping up to the challenges of the NHL, stating, “I don’t think there was much more development-wise for me in college hockey. It’s the right moment to push myself even more.”
Currently, the Wild are in a tight playoff race, needing a win against the Anaheim Ducks to secure their postseason spot. Buium could see game time as injuries have sidelined key defensemen Jared Spurgeon and Jake Middleton, adding to the urgency of the situation. “That’s the dream, playing in the NHL and taking that rookie lap,” he remarked. “It’s still a dream right now. Just super excited and honored to be here.”
Buium grew up in San Diego, where his parents relocated from Israel to pursue business opportunities. His early love for hockey saw him driven to daily practices over 112 miles away, laying the groundwork for an impressive trajectory that would lead him to prestigious institutions like Shattuck St. Mary's in Minnesota.
Despite his young age, Buium has experience on the international stage, winning gold medals in the IIHF World Junior Championship. He served as an alternate captain and played a pivotal role in the U.S. team’s success, including a notable game-winning goal during the final match.
As the Wild prepares for the critical matchup on Tuesday, Buium remains hopeful about his debut. He noted, “If I’m fortunate enough to do it, then I’m going to be super pumped and ready to go,” cementing his enthusiasm for stepping onto the ice in a professional capacity.
