AUGUSTA, Ga. — Rory McIlroy surged to the top of the leaderboard at the 2025 Masters on Saturday, shooting a stunning 6-under 66 in the third round. The Northern Irishman now leads at 12-under-par as he seeks his first green jacket, which would complete his career Grand Slam.

McIlroy, 35, started the day two shots behind leader Justin Rose but quickly made his intentions clear with three birdies and an eagle within the first five holes. His remarkable performance included a 339-yard drive on the par-5 15th, followed by a six-foot eagle putt that electrified the patrons at Augusta National.

“It was a dream start,” McIlroy said in a post-round interview. “I had a little wobble around the middle of the round, but a good putt on 11 steadied me, and I capitalized on the par 5s.”

Despite his strong showing, McIlroy’s cushion was trimmed to two shots by Bryson DeChambeau, who finished the round at 10-under after a 69, including a spectacular 16-yard putt on the 18th fringe.

McIlroy reflected on the pressure of Sunday’s final round, stating, “I’m not going to shy away from it. Situations like tomorrow are the reason I work hard and get up to practice.” He acknowledged the significance of competing against DeChambeau, who previously defeated him at the 2024 U.S. Open.

“If I didn’t want that pressure, I wouldn’t put in all the practice,” he added.

Before the final round, DeChambeau was seen celebrating with fans after his strong finish, highlighting the competitive atmosphere for the impending showdown.

Justin Rose, who led the tournament for two rounds, dropped to 5-under after a disappointing 75 on Saturday. His inability to find the fairway on several holes led to two late bogeys, leaving him outside the top five.

McIlroy’s strategy on Saturday showcased his excellent iron and approach play. “I’m pleased with my overall ball striking today,” he said, reflecting on his performance. “It sets me up well for tomorrow.”

As the final round approaches, the excitement at Augusta National builds. With a $21 million purse, including $4.2 million for the winner, the stakes have never been higher at the Masters. Observers expect an exhilarating finish as McIlroy seeks redemption for past disappointments, particularly with DeChambeau hot on his heels.

“This will be a showdown,” said one analyst. “McIlroy is well aware of what’s at stake, and with the history between him and DeChambeau, tomorrow will be a compelling watch.”
