Rory McIlroy Faces Cut Danger at 2025 PGA Championship

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The 2025 PGA Championship is underway at Quail Hollow Club, with 156 players competing for the coveted title. After the first round on Thursday, former Masters champion Rory McIlroy finds himself in a precarious position, having shot a 3-over 74.
With the cut set to take place after 36 holes, only the top 70 players and ties will advance to the weekend. The projected cut line is currently hovering around 1-over par. McIlroy’s struggles were evident as he hit only four of 14 fairways, preventing him from finding a rhythm.
In his group, fellow top-ranked golfers Scottie Scheffler and Xander Schauffele posted scores of 69 and 72, respectively. Scheffler, aiming for his own cut streak of 63 tournaments, has not missed a cut since the 2022 Masters.
McIlroy, a four-time winner at the Truist Championship held at Quail Hollow, needs a strong performance in Friday’s second round to stay in the hunt. Other notable players struggling to make the cut include Shane Lowry, Justin Thomas, and last week’s Truist Champion Sepp Straka, all sitting just above the projected cut line.
Quail Hollow has not hosted the PGA Championship since 2017, and its par-71, 7,626-yard course presents significant challenges. Historical data shows that in 2017, the cut fell at 5-over 147.
As the tournament continues, the cut line remains uncertain and will be finalized after Friday’s play. The PGA Championship will feature an exciting weekend of competition with a mix of established stars and rising talents vying for the Wanamaker Trophy.
This year, the championship can be viewed across various channels, including CBS and ESPN, with streaming options available on PGAChampionship.com and the CBS Sports App. Golf fans can expect a thrilling finish as players look to secure their spots for the final rounds.
