Roy Keane Criticizes Andre Onana for Goalkeeping Error in Manchester United’s Draw with Tottenham
Former Manchester United captain Roy Keane has criticized goalkeeper Andre Onana for his positioning error during United’s 2-2 draw with Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford. The game got off to a lightning start as Rasmus Hojlund opened the scoring for United in the third minute. However, Spurs equalized in the 19th minute when Richarlison rose above several United defenders to head home a corner. Despite the impressive strike, Keane believes Onana could have done better.
Keane voiced his concerns during the half-time break on Sky Sports, suggesting that Onana should have been more proactive in his goalkeeping. The former United captain highlighted Onana’s position on his line and emphasized the need for him to take control of the six-yard box. Keane expressed his frustration, stating that any goalkeeper should be losing it in a situation like that.
Manchester United’s vulnerability in defending set-pieces has been a cause for concern in recent matches. Keane pointed out that the team had received a warning earlier in the game and criticized their inability to deal with corners effectively. He also credited Spurs for their persistence in creating opportunities from set-pieces.
Gary Neville, another former United player and now a commentator, supported Keane’s assessment. Neville emphasized the importance of goalkeepers being dominant when defending set-pieces, even if they don’t come out to claim the ball. He suggested that Onana’s presence alone could have put some doubt in the taker’s mind and made the defenders’ job easier.
Prior to his criticism of Onana, Keane praised United for their brilliant start, with Hojlund’s thunderous strike giving them an early lead. However, the team was unable to hold onto their advantage, conceding twice in a game that ended in a 2-2 draw. The result leaves United in a disappointing position in the Premier League.
