Following the dismissal of Erik ten Hag, Manchester United is in advanced talks to appoint Sporting CP manager Ruben Amorim as his successor. Amorim, 39, has given an initial green light to the move, indicating his keenness to join the club and accept the terms discussed.

Amorim has a notable managerial record, having led Sporting CP to two Portuguese league titles since taking charge in 2020. He is known for his tactical setup, often employing a 3-4-3 system, which could mark a significant change from the 4-man defense used by Ten Hag.

Manchester City, who had been speculated as a potential suitor for Amorim, have ruled out pursuing him. City’s preference is for Pep Guardiola to extend his contract beyond the current season, and Amorim’s style of play does not align with City’s preferred 4-3-3 system.

The negotiations between Manchester United and Sporting CP are ongoing, with Amorim’s release clause estimated to be around £10 million ($12.9 million). United is prepared to pay this fee to secure his services. In the interim, Ruud van Nistelrooy has been appointed as the caretaker manager and will lead the team in the upcoming Carabao Cup tie against Leicester City.

Other candidates, including Thomas Frank of Brentford and former England manager Gareth Southgate, are also being considered, but Amorim is currently the leading contender. Frank’s release clause is nearly double that of Amorim’s, making Amorim a more financially viable option.

Amorim’s potential appointment comes at a critical time for Manchester United, who are currently in 14th place in the Premier League and have had a disappointing start to the season. His ability to adapt his tactical approach and his success in nurturing young talent could be crucial in revitalizing the team.
