Rublev, Alcaraz Advance at Monte-Carlo Masters Amidst Thrilling Matches

MONTE-CARLO, Monaco — Andrey Rublev and Carlos Alcaraz made significant strides at the Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters on Wednesday, April 9, 2025, with both players securing spots in the third round. Rublev defeated France’s Gael Monfils 6-4, 7-6(2) and Alcaraz overcame Francisco Cerundolo with a score of 3-6, 6-0, 6-1.
Rublev, the seventh seed, has faced challenges this season, including a coaching change and early exits in previous tournaments. However, his match against Monfils showcased his potential, as he hit 22 winners in a match that lasted one hour and 44 minutes. “I believe Marat can help me find my rhythm again on the court,” said Rublev about his new coach, former world number one Marat Safin.
Struggling initially, Monfils had a chance to turn the momentum in the second set, holding four set points but failing to convert. “I had my opportunities,” Monfils reflected. “But I couldn’t capitalize, and that shifted the match.” Ultimately, Rublev’s determination and resilience paid off as he progressed to face Frenchman Arthur Fils.
In his match, Alcaraz, ranked third in the world, started slowly, losing the first set to Cerundolo. However, he quickly adjusted by adopting a more aggressive return strategy in the second and third sets. “I just knew that I had to do something else, play more aggressively, and play my own tennis,” Alcaraz explained. His comeback also marked his first victory at the Monte-Carlo Masters.
Alcaraz’s opponent in the next round will be German player Daniel Altmaier, who eliminated veteran Richard Gasquet in a tightly contested match. Gasquet, who will retire after Wimbledon, played his final match in Monaco, having started his career at this tournament in 2002.
Meanwhile, Casper Ruud, last year’s finalist, defeated Roberto Bautista Agut 6-2, 6-1 and will continue his quest for his first Masters 1000 title against Australian Alexei Popyrin, who won his opening match against Frances Tiafoe.
As the Monte-Carlo tournament progresses, fans are eager to witness how these key matchups unfold on the clay courts. “Every match is important,” Rublev stated. “I want to build on this victory.” The anticipation grows as the tournament continues towards crowning a champion.
