Russell Westbrook’s Leadership Proves Invaluable for Denver Nuggets
DENVER, Colo. – At 36 years old, Russell Westbrook continues to defy expectations, proving his worth to the Denver Nuggets both on and off the court. The veteran guard, known for his relentless energy and leadership, has become a cornerstone for the team, particularly in mentoring younger players and maintaining a high standard during practices.
Nuggets coach Michael Malone praised Westbrook’s impact, stating, “When you have a guy like Russ, who’s going to lead with his voice, but also he’s your hardest worker in practice, and he’s doing everything with detail and holding other guys accountable when they’re not, you can’t put a dollar sign on that.” Westbrook’s averages of 12 points, 6.6 assists, 4.7 rebounds, and 1.7 steals per game have made his $3.3 million cap hit a bargain for the Nuggets.
Westbrook, who has played in all 34 games this season, attributes his consistency to his mental approach. “My mentality every night is to leave it on the floor. The next game is not promised to you by any means,” he said. His ability to step up as a spot starter when Jamal Murray or Aaron Gordon are unavailable has further solidified his value to the team.
Malone emphasized Westbrook’s enduring competitiveness, noting, “Here he is, 17 years in, still playing just as hard as he did when he was a rookie, which is just truly incredible.” Westbrook’s leadership has been particularly crucial for a Nuggets team that features several young and impressionable players.
Meanwhile, rookie Julian Strawther has also been making strides. After an injury-plagued debut season, Strawther has become a regular contributor, averaging 21 minutes per game. “I’ve definitely got to see some ups and downs, but just trying to grow with every opportunity that I have,” Strawther said. His development on both ends of the court has been encouraging for the Nuggets as they look to solidify their playoff rotation.
As the Nuggets prepare for a challenging stretch of games, including matchups against the Boston Celtics and Dallas Mavericks, Westbrook’s leadership and Strawther’s growth will be key factors in their success. The team currently sits in a strong position in the Western Conference, thanks in no small part to the contributions of their veteran guard and emerging rookie.
