CHICAGO, Ill. — Chicago Blackhawks forward Ryan Donato has found the net three times in the first seven games of the 2025 NHL season, raising hopes for his offensive performance this year.

After a significant 31-goal season last year, questions loomed over whether Donato could replicate that success. The Blackhawks signed him to a four-year extension with a $4 million cap hit during the offseason, but expectations were tempered by his inconsistent scoring history.

Donato’s significant improvement last season, where he shot a career-best 17.0 percent, sparked optimism among fans and the coaching staff. He believes his last season was just the beginning of his potential as a player.

“I think no matter where I am, I can create,” Donato said. “It’s about winning more than that.” His focus on team success over individual scoring reflects his commitment to contributing wherever needed.

In his fourth game of the season against the St. Louis Blues, Donato scored while falling to the ice after taking a cross-check. His goals have come from being around the net and capitalizing on chances, a strategy he successfully employed during his breakout year. He’s currently averaging more high-danger chances per game compared to last season, showcasing an uptick in offensive opportunities.

Blackhawks coach Jeff Blashill emphasized the importance of Donato producing offense on a competitive team. He noted that while Donato is striving to be a top scorer, he must balance his individual success with team objectives.

“There’s a difference there,” Blashill said. “He’s always challenging himself to play a complete game while being a scorer.”

As Donato continues to find his rhythm, he remains focused on maintaining his scoring opportunities. “You can get all the chances you want, and sometimes they don’t go in,” he said. “I just keep working hard and try to get those opportunities.”
