Sabalenka Dominates in Australian Open Opener
Belarusian tennis star Aryna Sabalenka wasted no time in starting her title defence at the Australian Open 2024. In a blazing display of dominance, Sabalenka breezed through her first-round match against German qualifier Ella Seidel, winning 6-0 6-1 in just 53 minutes.
Sabalenka’s eagerness to get on court was evident as she waited impatiently outside Rod Laver Arena for the preceding match between Novak Djokovic and Dino Prizmic to finish. Despite the late start time, the world No.2 was determined to make a quick statement.
The Australian Open, known for its historically late matches, nevertheless kicked off earlier this year in an effort to avoid such late-night encounters. The tournament is exempt from the new scheduling regulations introduced by the WTA and ATP, which recommend a start time of 6.30pm for the night session. However, Sabalenka’s match started at 11.41pm, making it clear that her focus was solely on her game.
In a display of sheer power, Sabalenka overwhelmed her 18-year-old opponent, Seidel, with her aggressive style of play. The Belarusian recorded 20 winners compared to Seidel’s four and completed the victory without dropping a single set.
Having won her maiden Grand Slam title last year, Sabalenka is embracing the challenge of defending her crown. She expressed her excitement about being back on the court and the support she received from the crowd.
Sabalenka’s dominance in her opener serves as a reminder of her determination to achieve more. The 25-year-old remains focused on her goals and is grateful for every opportunity she has to play. Aiming to become the first back-to-back women’s champion since Victoria Azarenka in 2013, Sabalenka’s confidence is unwavering.
As the Australian Open progresses, tennis fans can expect to witness Sabalenka’s relentless pursuit of success. With her eye-catching performance in the first round, she has already made her presence known in Melbourne Park.
