Sacramento Kings Sign Veteran Center Precious Achiuwa
SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The Sacramento Kings have signed free agent center Precious Achiuwa to a one-year veteran minimum deal, adding much-needed depth to their frontcourt.
This move comes as the Kings struggle with a 2-5 record to start the season. A corresponding roster change saw the team release second-year center Isaac Jones to make room for Achiuwa.
Achiuwa, 26, was drafted by the Miami Heat in 2020 and has since played for the Toronto Raptors and New York Knicks. He averaged 6.3 rebounds per game during his time with the Knicks and is known for his rebounding and defensive versatility.
With the Kings ranked last in the NBA for rebounds per game, Achiuwa’s presence is expected to significantly aid star player Domantas Sabonis, who leads the team with 13.6 rebounds per game.
Achiuwa’s previous experience includes 17 playoff games with the Knicks, where he started twice. His skill set aligns with the Kings’ current needs, especially with starting forward Keegan Murray recovering from wrist surgery.
“I’m looking to bring defending, rebounding, and toughness to this team,” Achiuwa said during his introductory press conference.
As the Kings look to gain momentum during a challenging homestand, Achiuwa’s addition signals a focus on improving the team’s performance while awaiting Murray’s return.
Stay tuned as the Kings prepare for matchups against tough opponents including the Golden State Warriors and Oklahoma City Thunder in the coming days.
