Saints Near Deal to Hire Doug Nussmeier as Offensive Coordinator

NEW ORLEANS, La. — The New Orleans Saints are on track to finalize a deal for Doug Nussmeier to become their offensive coordinator under head coach Kellen Moore, according to NFL insider Josina Anderson of Bovada. This potential hire marks Nussmeier’s first foray into an NFL coordinator position after a rich coaching tenure in college football.
Nussmeier has previously held offensive coordinator roles at some of the nation’s top college programs, including Florida, Michigan, Alabama, Washington, and Fresno State. His prior experience will likely serve him well in the NFL, where he aims to bring fresh strategies to the Saints’ offense.
Notably, Nussmeier has built a collaborative coaching relationship with Moore, having worked together at various stops. The duo crossed paths at the Dallas Cowboys from 2018 to 2022, then moved to the Los Angeles Chargers in 2023, and most recently the Philadelphia Eagles in 2024.
“It sounds like Doug Nussmeier is the favorite to be the Saints’ offensive coordinator,” Anderson reported earlier in the day, noting that while the deal isn’t finalized, discussions are progressing positively.
Nussmeier began his NFL coaching journey after being drafted by the Saints in 1994, where he played as a backup quarterback, making two starts during his brief tenure. He later achieved success in the Canadian Football League, winning a Grey Cup with the British Columbia Lions in 2000.
Transitioning to coaching in 1997, Nussmeier has gained extensive experience in various roles, serving as quarterbacks coach and tight ends coach for notable NFL teams. Prior to his appointment as the Eagles’ quarterbacks coach, he focused on developing skills for quarterbacks at the Cowboys and Chargers.
This new position with the Saints also places Nussmeier closer to his family, as his son, Garrett Nussmeier, is currently a quarterback at LSU and a frontrunner for the 2025 Heisman Trophy.
Nussmeier’s arrival is anticipated as the Saints look to revitalize their offense, especially under a system that Moore is familiar with and confident in. As coaching transitions unfold, the Saints may see additional staff changes, particularly as Nussmeier brings along others from his coaching circle.
The Saints continue to focus on building a competitive team, enhancing their coaching staff, and preparing for the next NFL season, with Nussmeier’s potential addition expected to play a key role in these ambitions.
